Local Chefs Show Off Their Talents
April in the Greater Peoria area is about to get a whole lot tastier! The third annual Peoria Vegan Chef Challenge is back, and it’s not just for those who eat plant-based—it’s for anyone who loves great food and a little adventure.
Special requests are a normal part of the restaurant business and a talented chef knows how to make kitchen magic happen regardless of the ask. When an absolutely amazing vegan item is served, it’s clear there’s real talent behind the scenes.
Throughout April, local restaurants are offering creative, plant-based specials that showcase the incredible skills of their chefs. “Whether you’re a regular or a first-time customer, you’ll find new dishes to enjoy,” says Amy Ashley, event organizer. “We love seeing chefs put their own spin on vegan dishes. The creativity never fails to impress!”
Restaurant owners know that when friends go out, it’s often the person with a special dietary need who picks the spot. Emilio Reyes head chef at Storm Shelter in East Peoria, says, “We joined last year not knowing what to expect, but the response was so positive that we made those dishes a permanent part of our menu.”
Manager Ashley Wages adds, “Some guests come for the vegan options, others just because the food is delicious. What I’m most happy about is that people who came for the first time last April keep coming back. It’s like they just discovered we exist.”
The challenge welcomes every kind of restaurant, from sports bars and bakeries to fine dining establishments, casual eateries, and cozy coffee shops. As guests sample a variety of delicious new dishes, they are encouraged to share their experiences by leaving a review on the challenge website. Each review also counts as a vote and enters the diner into a drawing for prizes from participating restaurants and sponsors.
