East Peoria Voice

Letter From the Mayor, John Kahl

In 2016, Congress established the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission to plan and orchestrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. America250 is a nonpartisan initiative that is being led by the commission to commemorate 250 years of American Independence. The initiative seeks to bridge divides, bringing people together to reflect on our nation’s journey, and to inspire us all to help shape our nation’s course for the next 250 years. It encourages renewed patriotism, increased civic engagement, and volunteerism across the nation.

Like many other communities across the nation, East Peoria has formed an America250 committee that has been tasked with coming up with creative ways in which our community can celebrate this historic milestone throughout 2026. They seek to plan, coordinate, and/or support various commemorative activities at the local level. Some ideas that have already been presented include the placing of commemorative banners throughout the Levee District, incorporating commemorative activities into some of our planned community events throughout the given year, including the America250 logo on some of our online and printed materials and advertisements, placing America250/historic decals on sidewalks, and creating historic murals to be placed on a few buildings. We always welcome public input, so if you know of any other patriotic ideas or any service and volunteer opportunities you would like to share, please contact us at City Hall.

We held discussions last year amongst some of the stakeholders during the planning of the annual Red, White, and Boom about including commemorative activities and perhaps enhancing the fireworks display as part of this year’s 4th of July celebration. East Peoria remains supportive of making this year’s celebration one for the ages.

We also look forward to working with our regional private and public partners to help promote and support various commemorative activities throughout the Greater Peoria region. One such partner is the Peoria Riverfront Museum. The Peoria Riverfront Museum is celebrating America’s 250th Birthday by putting on a series of exhibitions to celebrate 250 years of American art, science, history, and achievement. The Promise of Liberty exhibit, guest-curated by Ken Burns, is now open and remains open through January 3, 2027. This is a must-see and powerful exhibition that includes a remarkable collection of authentic historic documents.

Our nation is 250 years strong this year. Let us not take for granted the freedoms we enjoy today and the sacrifices made by so many to protect those freedoms. We encourage our residents to join us in celebrating 250 years of American Independence and taking part in any one of the commemorative activities taking place across this great nation of ours.

Always grateful,
John
