Summer Auto Care: Keep Your Car Running Cool and Safe

As temperatures rise, your vehicle faces new challenges. Heat affects everything from your cooling system to tire pressure, so a seasonal checkup can keep your car safe and road ready.
1. Cooling System Check
Overheating is a leading cause of summer breakdowns. Check your coolant level and inspect the radiator and hoses for leaks or wear. If your coolant hasn’t been flushed in the last two years, have it replaced. Make sure you’re using the correct 50/50 coolant mixture recommended for your vehicle.
2. Air Conditioning Performance
A weak AC can make summer driving miserable. If it’s not blowing cold, it may need a refrigerant recharge or an inspection for issues like a worn compressor or leaks. Always have a certified technician handle refrigerant work.
3. Tire Pressure & Condition
Heat causes tire pressure to rise, increasing the risk of blowouts if tires are overinflated—or wear if underinflated. Check pressure regularly, examine tread depth, and inspect for cracks or bulges. Don’t forget to rotate them if it’s been a while.
4. Battery & Fluids
Hot weather strains older batteries and can speed up failure. Ensure it is securely mounted, corrosion-free, and, if it’s not sealed, topped off with distilled water. Also, check and top off motor oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and windshield washer fluid.
5. Wiper Blades & Visibility
Summer sun can dry out wiper blades, just like winter wear does. Since summer storms can hit without warning, replace brittle or streaky blades before they become a problem.
By staying on top of your car’s summer maintenance, you not only improve safety but also avoid costly repairs down the road. A little preventative care now goes a long way in keeping you—and your vehicle—cool all season long.
