Letter From the Mayor, John Kahl

May 09, 2025 11:36AM ● By John Kahl

Local government is the one level of government that directly impacts the daily lives of residents. Local government delivers essential services that directly impact our daily lives, such as public safety, transportation, solid waste management, water and wastewater management, street construction and maintenance, and snow removal.

Local government is responsible for public safety, including police and fire protection, ensuring the safety and security of residents. According to the vast majority of residents who responded to a quality of life survey conducted by the City of East Peoria in 2015, public safety matters most. The East Peoria Fire Department also provides emergency medical services; all sworn personnel are required to be ALS-certified paramedics.

Local government manages crucial infrastructure like roads, bridges, public transportation, and water and sewer mains, impacting how people commute and access essential services. The topography and five-finger layout of East Peoria present unique challenges when constructing and maintaining crucial infrastructure. Due to its central location, East Peoria also has several state routes that run through its core and are to be maintained by IDOT.

Local government is responsible for providing or contracting out solid waste management and water and wastewater management services. The City of East Peoria delivers all of these essential services, along with recycling services. Water and wastewater management services are part of an enterprise fund, and these services are regulated by the IEPA. An enterprise fund is a type of governmental fund used to account for activities that are financed by user charges or fees and is separate from a government’s general fund and other governmental activities.

Local government is actively involved in community development, promoting economic opportunities and investments. They invest in infrastructure and public services, improving the quality of life and attracting businesses and residents. Local government plays a key role in creating and maintaining stable, well-paying jobs, and supporting local businesses. East Peoria maintains a thriving and diverse business community thanks to decades of visionary leadership and valued relationships.

Local government is uniquely positioned to better understand and address the specific needs and challenges of their communities with tailored solutions. Their responsiveness allows for more efficient and effective delivery of services. Active citizen participation is always encouraged and is essential for ensuring that local government decisions reflect the needs and desires of the community. The local government here in East Peoria always strives to serve the best interests of our entire community.

Always grateful,
John
